MY JOURNEY WITH MY DEAF SISTER.

I was a bit hesitant to write about this but went ahead anyway. It is not like it has ever been a big secret, but every time I have talked about it I have earned pity, shame and endless questions.

Allow me to introduce you to my younger sister Wendy Gakii Muriuki. The year 2004 was when this beautiful girl was brought to the world. At first we didn't notice that she was deaf until she is two years old.

After my parents realized this, they knocked every specialist door, talked to doctors, but all was in vain. To some of our neighbors, It was a "curse " as they termed it.

I would not deny it, the world of disability is a lonely one, filled with tears ,pain and dashed hopes and many were the times I would ask myself how different life would be if she could hear.

It is to my parents that I am forever grateful. For staying with her, nurturing her and sacrificing so much for her.Its hard to use sign language while you've never attended any sign language classes but its a whole experience too and my parents have done it without complaining or tiring.
